LIV no 8

Land art installation with Öland wheat and soil 20x55x2m Algutsrum 2017

With conceptual text-based art that touches upon existential questions interpreted both abstractly and concretely, Anne Hamrin Simonsson wants to highlight and remind us of the foundation of our lives: the environment and the premises for survival and growth. She has returned to and investigated the theme of LIFE-DEATH from a micro to a macro level through various materials, techniques, and expressions.

The works are double-layered with multiple entry points and layers. In the installation LIV no 8, the artist addresses cultural heritage alongside past and present needs for survival. The World Heritage site of southern Öland's cultivated landscape inspires with customs, traditions, and symbols dating back to the Stone Age.

The word culture means processing, cultivation, and education. All human activity can be read into the concept of spiritual cultivation, socially transmitted patterns of living with an interplay between people and their environment. This is realized on several levels in LIV no 8, where cultural heritage is brought to life with sheep and people who will use the work in various ways. Nature is sometimes juxtaposed as the opposite of culture.

The earth letters that affirm life in the word LIV, as well as in the sowing upon them, also bring to mind ancient burial mounds with a similar shape but with the opposite meaning: death. The number 8 is the symbol for omega, which means immortality. Öland wheat, which had been lost but reintroduced to the island via a gene bank, has been hand-sown on the letters. The word seed (säd) is ambiguous, meaning both grain and life-giving fluid, which metaphorically embodies life through the growing process.

The project is part of Experimental Cultural Heritage with support from the Kamprad Family Foundation.
