Site-specific installation Sheddings & A Search for the Identical Undantaget Kläppinge 1:18 2024

"Searching for roots, both my own and nature's, and examining the growth and decay of the life process is the foundation of my artistry. It is important for me to start from Öland and process traces and imprints from where I was born and raised, along with my family memories, materials, and environments. I work conceptually in an intuitive, process- and performance-oriented manner, where embracing an ode to slowness allows the process to take its proper space. With great care, I select significant objects and materials that carry a resonance, and build upon them in assemblages—hybrids of found objects—and creations using, among other things, DNA-bearing materials from my family, such as hair, nails, and chewing gum. This can lead to new encounters with multiple layers and contexts—finding meeting points where the past and the contemporary converge in my objects. In the works, I shift perspectives from micro to macro in both scale and meaning as I examine the similarities between humans and nature,
where everything shares the same core and rhythm—the topography of the body and nature, inner and outer landscapes.
Recurring themes are birth, life, and death, with cyclical processes of becoming and decaying, survival and growth, as well as origin and our connection to nature. In the dissolution of the material, new living space is created for new life in both humans and trees, where the process and conditions for life begin when others die."

In UNDANTAGET’s two rooms, primarily new works are shown, complemented by sculptures from the installation Under_Liv, which were produced for the exhibition at the Kalmar Art Museum. Objects featuring miniature figures, ornaments, and DNA-bearing materials are tested in new spatial contexts.

Sheddings & A Search for the Identical
Anne Hamrin Simonsson and Johanna Karlin
In an investigative process where the artists have found a common fundamental view regarding issues such as time in the form of growth and dissolution, cyclical processes of birth-life-death, and the value of objects, the artists now (re)turn their gaze to Öland, and specifically to the old smallholding at Kläppinge 1:18, Karlin's farm. In two locations on the farm—an artistic project room and a section of the barn—the artists execute shifts in their respective site-specific installations. Both artists utilized this artistic dialogue and method in the exhibition Ear to the ground and gaze outward (Örat mot marken och blicken utåt) at the Kalmar Art Museum during the Småland Triennial 2023.

The project was realized within the framework of the Småland Triennial's Open Call 2024, with support from the Småland Triennial, Konstfrämjandet Småland,
and the Kalmar Art Museum.
